Ben Stokes’ side put in a brave effort but India level the series with victory in Visakhapatnam

India completed a 106-run victory in the second Test in Visakhapatnam to level the five-match series 1-1.
England were targeting a record-breaking chase of 399 but were bowled out for 292. 
Their batting line-up failed to fire in the face of a daunting fourth innings target.

How did he not come away from Vizag with a Test hundred? Played some sublime shots but first innings slog opened the door for Bumrah. Poor drop at slip, his second miss of the series. 7 
Fell to Ashwin so that pressure is building again. Bouncier pitch nullified his sweep and he got out twice playing tentatively. Still put on 50 for both innings with Crawley, their consistency continuing. 4

Was bowled by one of the great yorkers but fell pretty softly in the second innings just as he was coming to the end of those frantic first 20 minutes at the crease. 4
A worry. The king of Asian pitches is looking fretful. Perhaps poor World Cup is playing on his mind or more likely Bumrah has got under his skin. Root was too desperate to score before he came on in the second. 3
Gets a start but gets out is the story so far. Dismissed five times in Test cricket by Bumrah including twice here. One that nipped away, the other ducked back in. 4
Wonder catch and superb captaincy ensured India never turned the screw or demoralised the spinners. England badly miss his bowling. Poor, lazy dismissal in the chase. 6

World-class keeping display and that must give the young spinners so much confidence and once again batted much better in the second innings. Safe even if Brook returns. 7
Best Test for England. Growing in confidence with the ball, with more flight and turn, particularly with the googly. Embraced the nighthawk role but there is a better player in there than scores suggest. 7
Emerging as a long term alternative to Leach. Good control in second innings and adapting to Test cricket well given how little experience he has of the job and the pressure that comes with it. Clearly a strong character. 7
Equalled his Ashes wicket haul – five – in one Test in a barnstorming comeback. He prides himself on his performance on Asian pitches and was superb with new and old ball giving control and wicket-taking threat. 8
Remarkable debut given his complete lack of experience and astute handling from Stokes ensured he started solidly enough. Lots to work with and clearly has a rock-solid temperament. 6

Horrible run of form ended with hundred that started skittishly but soon purred. Caught brilliantly. 8
India need more than pretty starts. But fielded superbly: took a great catch and ran Stokes out to guarantee the win. 6
Earned his selection but made minimal impression on debut, falling twice to Ahmed. Likely to be dropped if Rahul or Kohli return. 4

Solid. Batted fine, but too high at six. Passenger in first innings, but important early wickets on day four. 6
Largely being out-kept by Foakes and, on his home ground, gifted Ahmed two wickets with poor shots. 5
Expensive in first innings, but clever enough to bounce back in the second. Batted well, and is getting under England’s skin. 6
An inspired selection, who bowled very nicely on his return to Test cricket. Accuracy and mystery are a potent combination.7
Spell on day two was simply stunning. England need to find an answer for unique threat. In fourth innings, they just tried to block him, but he still took wickets. 9
A complete bystander for much of the game, before taking late wicket. Would be a surprise if he is seen again, with Siraj to return. 3
